Umugunda occurs the last Saturday of every month and on this day all Rwandans are required to clean up their local communities. That may include planting trees, repairing roads, etc. Because it is currently the rainy system, the dirt roads are in bad condition.
The last 3 kilometers of the road to the Akilah site is dirt and has become somewhat tricky to drive on since the rainy season began. A big ditch in the road had been fixed with a makeshift log bridge. The recent rains have worn it away and made it very difficult for even big cars to pass over. BUT, thanks to Umugunda, the villagers of the area fixed the bridge and have even begun to widen and resurface the road on the way to the school. We are so grateful for their help! Now our cars wont get stuck anymore (See the below video of this happening)
Monday, we had a great meeting with our Rwandan board members. We presented our work plan for the summer as well as our indicators and potential MOU with the Ministry of Education. If all goes as planned, I will meet with the Mayor, the District Land Bureau, and the Ministry of Education next week so that we can finalize all the documents we need in order to start construction in June.
Elizabeth is back in the states this month to fundraise and promote the Akilah Institute. For all of you in the Tampa area, the event this year is going to be amazing! We have a wonderful team of committee members who are dedicated to making this event a success.
