Bridge Fixed !!!

Umugunda occurs the last Saturday of every month and on this day all Rwandans are required to clean up their local communities. That may include planting trees, repairing roads, etc. Because it is currently the rainy system, the dirt roads are in bad condition.

The last 3 kilometers of the road to the Akilah site is dirt and has become somewhat tricky to drive on since the rainy season began. A big ditch in the road had been fixed with a makeshift log bridge. The recent rains have worn it away and made it very difficult for even big cars to pass over. BUT, thanks to Umugunda, the villagers of the area fixed the bridge and have even begun to widen and resurface the road on the way to the school. We are so grateful for their help! Now our cars wont get stuck anymore (See the below video of this happening)

Monday, we had a great meeting with our Rwandan board members. We presented our work plan for the summer as well as our indicators and potential MOU with the Ministry of Education. If all goes as planned, I will meet with the Mayor, the District Land Bureau, and the Ministry of Education next week so that we can finalize all the documents we need in order to start construction in June.

Elizabeth is back in the states this month to fundraise and promote the Akilah Institute. For all of you in the Tampa area, the event this year is going to be amazing! We have a wonderful team of committee members who are dedicated to making this event a success.

Rwandan Roads

This past weekend I went out to the site with Deo, the Deputy CEO of the Rwanda Development Board. (Read more about the Rwanda Development Board in a recent article in Fast Company).

It is the rainy season now and there is torrential downpour almost every day, causing detrimental damage to Rwanda’s unpaved roads. The last 4 km to the Akilah Institute is unpaved and logs have been haphazardly thrown over a ditch. Deo and I went out to the land shortly after a big rainstorm and this is what happened when we tried to drive over the “bridge.” Thankfully we were in Deo’s car or we would never have made it. (You can also see the marketplace in the small village of Mbyo, which is just a few kilometers away from the Akilah Institute).

Murakoze Cyane- Thank You So Much!

Razoo’s March Goodness contest ended on the 31st. Project Akilah entered in the last week of the month-long contest and did very well!

Nearly 200 people helped us raise almost $6,000! Akilah friends and supporters sent emails around the U.S to encourage people to donate at least $10. We were so touched by the messages that donors posted on our Donor Wall.

One of the many wonderful things about Razoo? 100% of your donation goes straight to the Akilah Institute, unlike other websites that charge a small commission fee.

Thank you to the following people who helped make this possible!!

Metropolitan Safari in New York!

Purchase your tickets to the 2nd Annual Metropolitan Safari in New York!

Our first event last year was a huge success. We had over 500 people at M1-5 in Tribeca!

The Zulu Drummers performing at Metropolitan Safari 2008

A friend knows the Zulu Drummers, who perform with the Lion King on Broadway. They will be performing again this year!

This event wouldn’t be possible without my dear friend, Heather Summe. In March 2008, I had lunch with Heather in Washington D.C. and we started discussing the idea of holding a big fundraiser in New York. I don’t think that either of us had any idea how much work something like this takes. With the support of many friends and volunteers we were able to pull it off, even though we were both exhausted and totally drained by the end of the night.

Amazing friends and Akilah supporters Caroline, Laura, and John helped us run Metropolitan Safari. Laura came up from D.C. and Caroline flew in from Seattle!

I don’t think that either of us slept at all the week before the event. We’re now pros after surviving the first event! Our team is prepared and ready for the 2nd Metropolitan Safari on May 1.

Our tickets sold out weeks before the 2008 Metropolitan Safari, so buy your tickets early this year!

All proceeds from Metropolitan Safari will go towards the Akilah Institute and will make a huge difference in helping us to accomplish our goal of starting classes in January 2010.
