Sondra Myers in Town

One of our advisory board members, Sondra Myers, was in town this weekend. We spent the afternoon walking around the Akilah site and showing her all of the buildings.

I first met Sondra last fall in Kigali. She has been working with the Ministry of Education to design a handbook and curriculum for secondary students about civic engagement and the role of citizens in a democracy. Sondra is a Senior Fellow for International, Civic, and Cultural Projects at the University of Scranton. She has worked with the National Endowment for the Humanities and was cultural adviser to Pennsylvania governor Robert P. Casey.

Home Sweet Home

I arrived back in Rwanda last weekend. It is so great to be home.

Being away for three months is far too long. I have a very nomadic lifestyle when I’m not in Rwanda. But when I’m in Kigali I’m able to actually unpack my suitcase and sleep in my own bed, rather than on a friend’s couch.

In nine weeks, I was in Tampa, New York, Washington D.C., Boston, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Seattle, Hong Kong, and now Rwanda. Phew!

I met with board members, donors, volunteers, foundations, and partners. It was an absolute whirlwind.

Some highlights from my trip:

At Obama's inauguration!

At Obama's inauguration! I spent most of my U.S. time in Washington D.C. My wonderful friend and mentor Martha Schlesinger let me stay at her house in Georgetown. Our Board member Laura Heaton and many of our supporters and volunteers are in the D.C. area

I went to Boston for meetings and to attend the Starting Bloc Institute as an alumni facilitator. I spotted the Rwandan flag at Tufts University!

Pittsburgh at night. I stayed with my friend Steve and met with the team at Manchester Bidwell, a prestigious training school in Pittsburgh.

I spent a lot of time with Susan Johnson while I was in the Bay Area. She is taking a sabbatical from Seventh Generation to come to Rwanda for three months and oversee our curriculum development.

Give $10 so Akilah can win $10,000!

Razoo logoWill you please donate $10 so that we can win $10,000?

Between NOW and March 31, Project Akilah is competing to get the most supporters to make a minimum donation of $10 at Razoo, a non-profit social networking site. The current leader has 141 supporters, so the $10,000 is definitely within our reach!

Visit Project Akilah’s page at Razoo, and make a donation of just $10 or more. It’s a simple gesture (just 5 minutes of your time) to make a world of difference in the lives of the young Rwandan women Akilah supports.

THANK YOU!

AfH-Akilah presents at Catholic U.

Last night, the Akilah-AfH team in D.C. took our ideas on the road (or, across town to be precise) to give a lecture at the School of Architecture and Planning at Catholic University. Professor Adnan Morshed invited us to speak to a large group of undergrads and Masters students on the topic of how architecture can be applied through activism to achieve social goals. Of course, AfH’s mission is perfectly in line with Professor Morshed’s concept, and our architects’ enthusiasm for community involvement/betterment certainly made that apparent.

Vrunda and Shurid represented AfH and put together a spectacular slideshow of photographs and drawings to illustrate their various projects, tell the story of how they got involved with Akilah, and show what inspired them on their first trip to Rwanda last fall. I spoke for the Akilah team about the history of the organization and our beautiful land in Mayange, the evolution of the project, and the involvement of our broader global team.

Professor Morshed and his students posed thoughtful questions and gave us enthusiastic feedback. Sitting in the audience among the C.U. students was a contingent of brand new AfH’ers from Virginia Tech who had driven four hours to see our presentation and learn about how to get their campus AfH branch started. It’s always so inspiring to meet other young people who are interested in putting their skills to use to make meaningful change in our own communities and abroad. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see some new faces at AfH’s next meeting!

If you’re interested in getting involved, send an email to laura@ProjectAkilah.org.
